Pornography is a $15-billion per year industry, that researchers say is not slowing down. A Porn Hub article ranks Alabama 2nd in the country for the most the time viewers spent on pornography websites last year, averaging 10 minutes and 48 seconds per visit. As such, who's watching it? Marriage and Family Therapist, Dr. Hal Threadcraft, says: 1) men; 2) an increasing quantity of women; and 3) children as young as eight years of age.

"They have perused it while doing their homework." Dr. Threadcraft says it is vital that parents closely monitor their children's Internet activity.

Among men who watch porn, 70% do so at least once a month. And, 30% of porn today is watched by women. Through an increase in activity, is watching porn really so bad? While many argue watching erotic videos is healthy and normal, Dr. Threadcraft disagrees. He says the impact may be extremely damaging and have far-reaching effects.

Nevertheless, some argue pornography can bring couples closer together, Dr. Threadcraft, says he has counseled clients devastated through the impacts of porn addiction. He says it not only has the possibility to destroy relationships, but it accounts for 50% of divorces. It creates insecurity and severely hurts intimacy.

"I have found in my counseling practice that it is quite hard for a woman when her husband is addicted to pornography, "Who am I competing with?'"

With dopamines, endorphins, and epinephrines that doctors say are released within the brains of individuals watching pornography, researchers liken its mental effects to those of a highly addictive drug.

"When your body is releasing certain chemicals, like dopamines, as with cocaine, crack, marijuana, meth -- you get to a point the place you want an increasing number of," says Dr. Threadcraft. "What used to satisfy you no longer does."

But other findings, like those in a 2008 Danish study, suggest best adult content [homepage] videos are no more addictive than the average movie. Nonetheless, Dr. Threadcraft, citing the guilt and shame that often accompany the act, says additionally, it takes a spiritual toll also.
